The Mine That Generates Cash at the Bottom of the Cycle
September 23, 2001. Brookwood, Alabama. A Sunday.
No production that day. Just a maintenance crew, two thousand feet underground in Mine No. 5.
5:20. Evening. A roof collapse released methane. The first explosion injured several miners. One of them, Gaston Adams, was too badly injured to move. Twelve miners moved toward the damaged section to bring him out. Charlie Nail was trying to place his rescue mask on Adams.
6:15. The second explosion. Thirteen men died. Gaston Adams and the twelve men who tried to save him.

It happened in the Blue Creek seam. The same seam Warrior Met Coal mines today. Mines No. 4 and No. 7 sit between 1,400 and 2,100 feet underground, some of the deepest vertical shaft coal mines in North America. Men still ride that same three-minute cage down every morning.
Why does anyone dig that deep for coal? Because this is not coal. Not the kind you burn.
Steel is made by tearing oxygen away from iron ore. The thing that does the tearing is coke. Baked metallurgical coal, almost pure carbon. Inside a blast furnace, coke is not just fuel. It strips the oxygen from the ore and holds the entire column open so the furnace can breathe. Nothing else does all of that at once. Not electricity. Not gas.
And coal that makes strong coke is geologically rare. Blue Creek coal has some of the lowest sulfur on Earth and coking properties that match premium Australian hard coking coal. That is why steel mills in Japan, Brazil and the Netherlands call Alabama.
A new mine like this takes five to ten years to build. Meanwhile the price sits near the floor of the cycle. At these levels, Central Appalachian mines are cash flow negative. Some are already closing.
